Reigning Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli shocked the tennis world on Wednesday by announcing her retirement from the sport at the age of 28.

Following a second round loss to Romanian Simona Halep at the Western and Southern Open, Bartoli said: "I just really can't do it anymore."

Her surprise announcement comes just six weeks after she beat Germany's Sabine Lisicki at Wimbledon to claim her one and only Grand Slam title.

Marion Bartoli was bullied online following that win, but shook all that off without a second thought. Enduring pure physical pain was another story.

She contemplated calling it quits right after that, citing the injured left foot, right ankle, right hamstring and Achilles tendon injury that she is battling.

"I have pain everywhere after 45 minutes or an hour of play," she said. "I've been doing this for so long. And yeah, it's just body-wise, I can't do it anymore."

Once the joy of winning Wimbledon left, the pain returned and she found herself considering the end of her career. Last night was just the final straw.

The Frenchwoman, currently ranked seventh in the world, won eight career titles and more than $11 million on tour since turning pro in 2003.
